The VFW is also joined by members of the Auxiliary. They foster true patriotism, and strengthen the institutions of freedom by word and deed. They improve their cities, towns and neighborhoods through community service. They give aid to worthy comrades and to the widows and orphans. They extend helping hands to the needy and the sick.

VFW National Home for Children

Post 261 and its Auxiliary are strong supporters of the VFW National Home for Children where Families of Veterans and its Auxiliary in need are welcomed to live in the community for up to 4 years.  With the aid of a case worker, they work to identify what they need and want to accomplish, during which time they are provided housing, daycare, education, and recreation opportunities.

VFW Cares About Education - Teacher of the Year Award

Founded in 1899, the VFW highly supports the education of America’s youth. VFW and its Auxiliary have developed a slate of programs dedicated to helping America’s educators. VFW Citizenship Education programs stimulate interest in America’s history, traditions, Americanism, civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism.

VFW wants to identify and recognize America’s
best educators who instill a sense of national pride in students. It offers cash awards, commemorative plaques and all-expenses-paid trips to the VFW National Convention for these worthy teachers. The trip provides an opportunity for winners to network with like-minded individuals.

Unmet Needs Financial Grant Program

Unmet Needs is there to help America's military families who have run into unexpected financial difficulties as a result of deployment or other military-related activity or injury. The program provides financial aid of up to $5,000 to assist with basic life needs in the form of a grant -not a loan- so no repayment is required. To further ease the burden, we pay the creditor directly.

Since the program's inception, Unmet Needs has distributed more than $6.75 million in assistance to more than 4,300 qualified military families, with nearly half of those funds going directly toward basic housing needs.

VFW Mental Wellness Campaign

A staggering 20 veterans commit suicide every day, and the VFW is committed to helping change the narrative and stigma surrounding mental health in America.

In order to raise awareness, foster community engagement, improve research and provide intervention for those affected by invisible injuries and emotional stress, the VFW has teamed up with the nationwide organizations Give an Hour and the Campaign to Change DirectionOne Mind, PatientsLikeMe and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to combat this critical issue.
